2017 Artists Open Studios
31 January 2017
The new website was designed by Lisa Brauns of Dreamland Design in Whitianga. With an excellent understanding of ArtEscape and having designed the Guide for many years, Lisa has created a slick, user friendly website with a more modern look and easy navigation. It is fully mobile friendly (responsive), so therefore much easier to use from tablets and smartphones. New functionality includes a downloadable, printable version, artists sorted by media and artist Google "My map” so visitors can simply scan the QR code on the website and use it to navigate to the studios of their choice. The Trust sincerely thanks Pub Charity for its contribution to the new website.
To further celebrate the 10th Anniversary Open Studios, the Trust will be opening a Pop Up Guest and Emerging Artists Gallery in the Ray White Auction Rooms, Whitianga. Invited artists from other areas of the Coromandel Peninsula will complement the member media. It is a chance for emerging artists who may not have exhibited before to gauge public interest and receive feedback.
To encourage promotion and develop growth of the visual arts in our area the Trust welcomes two established Art groups - the Whitianga Art group and the Hikuai Art group.
The Artists Open Studios are held over the first two weekends of March each year. This year they occur on 4 & 5th and 11 & 12th March. The line up of 39 artists and 2 Art groups features a diverse range of media, including drawing, fine woodwork, harakeke weaving, hand forged knives, jewellery, lamp worked glasswork, mixed media, mosaics, painting, photography, pottery and prints.
Visit studios and workshops at your own pace, meet the artists and learn about their creative process. The artists welcome you into their home studios to share their passion and creativity. “Our artistic community includes many diverse, exciting artists and we are proud to present this iconic event attracting so many visitors to our beautiful area which in turn provides many benefits for the community,” says Trust Chairman Stuart Christie.
The Gala Opening of the will be held on Friday 3 March at 7.30pm at Hot Waves Café, Hot Water Beach. This is a chance to meet and with the artists while enjoying bubbles and dessert nibbles. This popular event launches the Showcase exhibition featuring a work from each member as well as from the 2016 Scholarship recipients. Tickets are available here. To celebrate the 10th Anniversary the Trust has challenged member artists to interpret the theme ‘Growth’ in their chosen media. The exhibition continues until Easter Monday and the public are encouraged to vote for their favourite artwork in the People’s Choice Award. Prominent recognition goes to the artist receiving the most votes. In addition they receive a voucher from Gordon Harris - the Art & Graphic Store.
Member artists are working hard to produce fresh new work and they look forward to welcoming you to their studios and workshops.
