Raewyn Hildreth Weaving & Photography Exhibition at Mercury Bay Estate
On display until the end of January 2019
Entry is free
Raewyn Hildreth's latest exhibition features harakeke (flax) weaving and photography that relates to her weaving practice.
Raewyn learnt traditional Maori techniques of weaving first at Paekakariki and then obtained a Bachelor of Maori Visual Art from studies at Palmerston North and Te Kuiti. Now living in Whitianga she has a weaving studio with a pa harakeke where she grows, harvests, dyes and weaves NZ flax (harakeke) and welcomes visitors each year through the Mercury Bay Art Escape open studio tour. She delights in seeing people become as interested as she is by the process of taking very ordinary and often under-valued flax leaves and transforming them into something beautiful.
For the last few years she has been experimenting with contemporary weaving, mainly the weaving of sculptured bodices. She also loves to document and photograph her work.

Mercury Bay Art Escape Trust in partnership with Mercury Bay Estate are pleased to present this solo exhibition by Martinus Sarangapany a Mercury Bay Art Escape artist.
Born in the Far North of New Zealand, Martinus Sarangapany has lived a nomadic lifestyle. He came to the Coromandel in 2007 and since then Hahei has become his ' home away from home.'
Sarangapany works with a variety of art mediums and has found a passion for printmaking with a primary focus on woodcut. Using woodcut techniques, he portrays the weird and wonderful people in his life. Each print has a story to tell; they reflect a moment in time, comedic or melancholic.
“Through woodcut, these creatures dance alongside my narratives, widening the imagination and maybe helping you to create your own stories, “ says the artist.
